Overview
DHL wanted to create an app for their 100,000 employees worldwide to help them develop within their careers through training, content and mentorship. Including encouraging employees to take part in DHL programmes and keeping them informed of updates and news within the business.
I worked on the initial stages of the project, from sketching ideas to working on a survey to gather user feedback and developing the UI for the app.

Breaking down the project
The project began with a series of kick off workshops with stakeholders to understand what was required from the app. From these workshops we discussed the functionality of the app, set high level goals and KPIs.
To gather user insights we asked employees at a DHL conference to complete a survey to learn more about how the product might fit into their day-to-day working lives. Focus groups were also conducted with employees.
Research Findings
Employees want something straight forward
Users requested a mix of useful content (to make life easier) and fun stuff (to make people want to download the app). To bring systems together that already exist at DHL into the app so that they don’t need to visit different sites and have different passwords to gain access.
Focusing on the essential services first
Essential services would include booking holidays, seeing shifts, digital passport and onboarding. Followed by the fun stuff later like benefits and networking activities.
Not everyone has a workplace mobile phone
Smrtr would be more useful for people out in the field but not everyone has a company phone so it needs to be worthwhile for them to download to a personal device.
The look and feel was important
They want the app to look approachable and friendly, so like a social site and not too corporate. With content that's more personalised to them.
User Flows, Wireframes and Screen Iterations
We spent time ideating the functionality of the app and the screens we wanted to include. Taking the initial paper sketches and annotations, converting them to wireframes and then higher fidelity designs for testing.
Outcome
The app launched in the Philippines in October 2019 to 3,000 employees, this gave us time to make any adjustments before the global rollout. The global rollout happened in 2020 to 100,000 employees.
